She sat down at the coffee shop with her order in her hands. The coffee was scalding hot, but she still raised the cup to her lips. She couldn’t feel it. Her satchel bag was in her lap, another scorching presence warming her legs. Putting down the cup, she lifted the cover and looked in. The sun shone on her face, with the moon intensifying the glow.

A man sat down at her table in front of her.
“You.” He growled.
“Me.” She grinned.
“Give it back, you don’t know what you’re doing.”
“I do know.”
He paused at this remark.
“Then why have you done this? The humans will die. You will die.”

The man stopped suddenly, noticing a change in the woman. She went from a faded child, someone who should have been dead eons ago to vibrant, a bright blood red, anger.
“Good.”
She stood up from the table, and after draining her coffee cup, left the cafe. The man hurriedly stood up to follow.
“Where are you going? We’re not done!” He screamed.

She continued walking, out the door, down the street, and towards the nearest river. After opening the satchel, she unceremoniously dumped the celestial bodies into the river. The moon was carried down the river, towards the sea. The sun fell with a hiss and sunk to the bottom of the river, dead as a rock.

The sky turned dark, and suddenly the night came in the middle of the day. The stars shone sickly and tired.
She turned to look at Zeus, who stared at her in anger and astonishment.

“I couldn’t save my siblings and you turned away from my mother. In the end, you couldn’t save your children and the humans have turned away from you.”
Niobe’s remaining child approached the powerless god, and wrapped her hands around his throat.
“Now die.”

comments
